Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take you to create one of your drawings?
Each piece is different, and my artwork is a form of meditation for me, so I am not really focused on the passage of time as I am working. Due to the intricacy, detail, and size of the originals, a drawing usually takes about 40 - 50 hours. I am always working on several pieces concurrently; so there tends to be some interesting cross-polination and repetition of imagery that magically occurs, especially when I am working on a series, such as my most recent body of work: Tree Hugs.
Where do you get the ideas for your work?
The ideas for my work are direct reflections of the inner work I am doing on my life's journey. I will harness imagery as symbolism for issues or growth areas in my life, particularly as I do my own shadow work. I am a strong believer in the therapeutic value of art, and my work has helped me, and hopefully others, to bring areas of struggle and darkness to the light. There are recurring themes of the inner child, human connection, family patterning, repetition in life and nature, oneness, and embracing the shadow. I have experienced the vibrant expansion and energy that comes with greater personal wholeness and integration; and that has been a direct result of my willingness to embrace my personal shadow areas.
My creative process has evolved over time to the point where I now begin with a blank paper and channel the images that appear before me, without a previous vision or intention. The Tree Hugs gallery reveals this body of work, and it is the first in a series in which I have collaborated with a musician (Mike Mattice) to create accompanying meditations for several of the pieces. The meditations can be heard by visiting soundcloud.com/freedomdog.
